Lower Chubut River Valley Tour – History, nature, and Welsh culture in one day

A complete journey through central Patagonia that combines landscapes, wildlife, history, and traditions. From Patagonian dolphins to ancient fossils and Welsh cultural heritage, this tour offers the opportunity to discover some of the most authentic aspects of the region in a single day.

Excursion itinerary

The excursion begins in the morning with pick-up from your accommodation. The first stop is Rawson, the capital city of Chubut Province, where there is the option to join a Patagonian dolphin watching tour (optional activity). These small dolphins, endemic to the region, are known for their distinctive black and white coloring and their playful acrobatics in the water.

The tour then continues along the coast through Playa Unión. Depending on timing and availability, there may be free time to enjoy typical seafood from the region, such as fried squid, shrimp, and other local specialties (optional).

The journey continues to Gaiman, a town located along the Chubut River and one of the main Welsh settlements in the region. The landscape is characterized by tree-lined farmland, cliffs, and eroded ravines. In Gaiman, visitors may enjoy the traditional Welsh Tea (optional), prepared according to long-standing traditions and served with homemade cakes, breads, and sweets. The visit also includes the Railway Tunnel and, if time allows, a typical local farm where regional products and aromas can be discovered.

Later, the tour reaches Trelew, where there is a stop at the replica of Patagotitan Mayorum, the largest dinosaur ever discovered, located at the entrance to the city.

Optionally, visitors may also visit the Egidio Feruglio Paleontological Museum (MEF), one of the most important museums of its kind in South America. The museum displays dinosaur skeletons discovered in the region, large scenic murals, and thousands of fossils organized by eras and geological periods. Through large windows, visitors can also observe scientists working in the laboratory. The entrance fee to the MEF is not included.
